Historical Film Genres


In this course, a selection of film genres will be presented for comparitive analysis, including four or five genres such as gangster films, "film noir" detective films, westerns, musicals, or films that depcit and characterize professions such as journalism or jurisprudence. Films will be selected within each genre that offer different commentaries on recurrent socials themes of American history. This course will also incorporate a significant amount of reading and research in primary-source documents relating to the historical periods and themes represented in the films. It will aslo include new secondary-source and interpretive texts. The course will thus extend the students repertoire of analytical skills in the field of history to more sophisticated intellectual challenges. Prerequisite: One year introductory sequence in history required. Capacity may be overridden by dept chair only
