Foundations of Morality


An examination of the moral theories of four major positions selected from World philosophy traditions: those of Aristotle and Kant from the Western tradition; and those of Confucius and Buddha from the Eastern tradition. The aim of this course is to explore as systematically as possible the question of how one decides what is the best or most moral life. Other central questions concern the relationship of ethics to views of human nature, religion, science, etc.
