SpTp: Advanced Production

This course is an introduction to the history, institutions, doctrines, music, and ritual practices of Buddhism in Japan. It covers covers the transmission of Buddhism from China and Korea to Japan; the subsequent evolution in Japan of the Tendai, Shingon, Pure Land, Nichiren, and Zen schools of Buddhism during the medieval period; the interaction between Buddhism, "Shinto," and "folk religions"; the relationship between Buddhism and the state, especially during the Edo period; Buddhist perspectives on nature, healing, and pilgrimage; and Buddhist modernism during the Meiji period. Major Buddhist figures, such as Kukai, Dogen, Shinran, Takuan, and others will be considered. No prior background in music is required.
