SpTp: Augustine and Aquinas

Introduction to Augustine of Hippo (354-430) and Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) as defining figures of Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages. The first half of the course focuses on a reading of Augustine's Confessions and other works. The second half selects from Aquinas's major writings, primarily Summa Theologica. Themes include faith and reason, God's nature, the human person and final ends, redemption, free will, virtue, happiness, and politics and war. Two courses in philosophy or religion.
