French 494 10: L'amour au Moyen Âge

"Love conquers all"; "Love is a battlefield"; "There is a fine line between love and hate. Some of our most common notions about love were already commonplaces in the Middle Ages. Taking several literary works of medieval France as our point of departure, we shall investigate various approaches to love and the various modes of representation used to define it. While considering the ways in which another culture viewed love, we shall also observe how medieval notions of love inform our own.

The reading list includes: Ovid, Ars amatoria; Andreas Capellanus, The Art of Loving; the poetry of the troubadours; the letters of Héloïse and Abelard; Chrétien de Troyes, Le chevalier au lion; Marie de France, Lais; Christine de Pisan, La cité des dames.

Please note: All class sessions and readings will be in French. To register, you must have completed at least one class in French at the 300-level or have received the permission of the instructor.
